Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, called the attack on the city the largest ever. Unprecedented, he said. Some drones reached the refinery and a residential building. He blamed an attempt to disrupt elections.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of Moscow Oblast, reported deaths there. Those are public reports. I decline the joke.

Then the counts.

TASS quoted the Russian defense ministry: 1,110 fixed-wing drones intercepted overnight, nationwide, over many regions, Crimea, and the Black Sea. Intercepted.

The ministry had another tally for the past day. 1,951 drones. Bloomberg/Rigzone, carrying Interfax, put 1,110 overnight and 1,951 for the past day on the same page and let both stand.

Sobyanin said more than 1,600 intercepted since September 19, 450 of them approaching Moscow. Earlier that night his rolling update was 152 heading for Moscow, and Vorobyov had 249 downed in the oblast. Rolling numbers. One night.

Overnight nationwide intercepts: 1,110. The past day: 1,951. Since September 19: more than 1,600. Moscow-bound: 450.

Four clocks on four maps, all of them Russian claims. Kyiv did not publish a launch figure. Zelensky named the weapons. He did not say how many. The Kyiv Independent said it could not verify the numbers.

The Associated Press wrote launches.

Headline: “Ukraine launches over 1,000 drones at Russia.” The lead said Ukraine fired more than 1,000, including hundreds toward Moscow. In the body the ministry “shot down a total of 1,110,” and Sobyanin had 450 destroyed en route. A correction moved 1,100 to 1,110. Launches remained launches.

CNN opened the morning on one page with more than 1,000 launched, the ministry’s 1,110 overnight, and Sobyanin’s more than 1,600 since Saturday. By evening that page said “more than 1,900 drones, eight guided aerial bombs, eight cruise missiles and four rockets were shot down overnight. That tally makes the attack Ukraine’s largest ever, although Kyiv did not confirm the exact number.”

1,951 was the past-day tally. Overnight is a shorter clock. CNN’s evening lede used the past-day tally as an overnight total.

The Guardian wrote that the attack involved about 1,600 drones, 450 of which were aimed directly at the capital, Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. Involved. Since September 19, used as the size of one barrage.

BBC stayed in Moscow. Largest attack, hundreds of drones, the mayor says. 450 heading for the capital, shot down. No 1,110. No 1,600. No 1,900. The same live page had carried 249 and 152 a few hours earlier. The page changed. One night.

I cannot tell you how many drones Ukraine launched. The ministry’s intercept figures are unverified claims. The fire was real. The dead in Moscow Oblast were real.

Open one headline and you get one attack. A thousand launched. Or 1,900 overnight. Or 1,600 involved. Or hundreds at Moscow.

Hold the four clocks and the night has four sizes.

The wires needed a size. They used the intercepts.
